Our May 2024 Update
We hope you’ve all had a great start to the year. Here’s our update for May 2024 from the whole team at St Mellons Golf Club.
Update From The Board
IN THE CLUBHOUSE
This April we carried out much needed improvement works to the lower function room that converted the space to a multi-functional lounge with access to the balcony via 2 no full height bi fold doors.
Works included new ceiling, modern lighting and bi fold doors giving a much-improved view of the 1st tee and putting area.
As a result of these improvements the club was able to hold 2 weddings over the weekend for 80 and 120 guests respectively. On Monday morning our staff were able to convert this area back to a members lounge big enough to sit 34 people.
Special thanks in no particular order go to members Mike Fowler, Steve McDonald, Ceiran O Sullivan, Danny Taylor, Liz Brown Joe Borley, Sam Jacobsen and Paul O Brien who all used their skill and expertise to assist in getting these improvements over the line in time (just !) and within budget.
Next month to complete the project a Solid Wall sliding door system will be installed by another of our valued member Tony Regan.
ON THE COURSE
After jumping through several planning hoops and fully satisfying tree preservation regulations we finally completed works to our driving range. Apologies to all those inconvenienced by the delay this last winter but I’m sure you all agree it’s a great practice facility and a wonderful HQ for our Junior Academy.
The project was fully funded by Sports Wales Active grant aid. Special thanks to our members Steve, Josh and Tom Pesticcio of SSS Engineering Services Ltd and our President Terry Borley for overseeing the works.

Captains Drive in followed by the Carvery was a great success and we were very lucky with the weather.
Thanks to all the the members who took time out to support this very special start to our 2024 season. The Par 3 Masters challenge was very well supported and proved to be a popular event with fun element of golf. Thanks to Brian Lee and his team to organise the Par 3 challenge course. Last Sunday New members played for the John Hughes Cup donated by Hughes family much appreciated by all.
On the social front Curry Evenings are gaining momentum however the Club nights need the members

From Our Ladies’ Captain
Dear members
Finally the weather seems to have settled down at last and we have been able to get on the course and enjoy some golf!
The Rules Night held in early April was a very enjoyable, informative and sociable event. Thanks go to Ann Booth for presenting different on course scenarios for us to discuss and to Amar for providing delicious refreshments yet again. It was well attended and I’m sure we will do some more later in the year.
The official start of the golf season teed off with the Captains Drive In on Sunday April 7th . A great atmosphere was created by an excellent turn out of members and family to see Mr Captain and myself tee off. Punch and refreshments were provided before hand and a sweep was carried out to guess the drive distance of the Captains. Luckily we both managed to get our drives away and £168 was raised for Cancer Research UK and Parkinsons UK. Thank you for everyone’s generosity. A 16 hole 4BBB competition followed with a shotgun start enabling us all to finish together for a carvery and presentation. Well done to Jivan Bhogal who won the mixed competition with Ranvir and who also won the longest female drive and to Jules Dolby who came second with Keith Madsen.
The ladies weekly competitions have finally got underway starting with a medal on 10 th April and a money raiser for Velindre on the 17th …….both won by Rachel Gaetches. Well done, great start Rachel!
The Senior ladies kicked off their season on the 22nd with a fun waltz stableford. All the tee times were filled which was a very encouraging start and it was great to see so many ladies enjoying themselves on and off the course.
Looking ahead to May we have a very busy month with golf, social events and our Diamond Jubilee week 13th – 19th as well as weekly competitions and County events for the ladies. Please look out for event information and support St Mellons Golf Club in these various events. They will only be a success if
we take part where we can.
Enjoy your golf!

From The Junior Section
This month has seen the start of our weekly junior competitions being held every Saturday afternoon. The first two week’s competitions have been extremely well supported with some excellent golf on display!
These competitions give an excellent opportunity for juniors to experience competitive golf, work towards a handicap and improve their scores. We have divisions for all ages/abilities with players aged from 6 to 17 competing so far!
Well done to everyone who has participated and congratulations to our winner this month! Results are published every Friday in the weekly newsletter. We are looking forward to a great summer of golf ahead!
Big thank you to our team of Junior Organisers James Lewis, Liam Eley and Mark Anderton for who’s help during these competitions is invaluable!
