I have been a member of St.Mellons Golf Club for over 40yrs. Serving 10 years on Committee in various roles.
In 1999 Denzil Hartley asked me to be his Vice Captain.
I took the role of Club Captain in the Millennium year 2000 a time I thoroughly enjoyed.
I was honoured to be made Club President in 2022 a position I am very proud of.
I’m Russell Thomas and I am General Manager of St Mellons Golf Club. I bring to the role a wealth of experience gained over the last 16 years working as a golf club manager to benefit St Mellons.
As well as having managed Newport, Cardiff & Thurlestone golf clubs, I have spent the last seven years at The Glamorganshire. During my time there, I helped it to grow into one of the premier clubs in South Wales appointing a new Head Professional, Course & Grounds Manager and Clubhouse Manager. I also supported a project team on major developments including an extensive bunker improvement programme, brand new car-park and the upgrading of the facilities around the Clubhouse. Those of you who regularly play at The Glamorganshire may have notice these changes.
As a result of such progress, the Club has a much-increased annual turnover, greater member satisfaction, a waiting list and an entrance fee. I am very proud of these achievements particularly as they come on the back of the difficult experiences we all went through during the pandemic. I aim to help the new Board, Staff and Membership take St Mellons forward together and hopefully replicate my successes mentioned. I know that the Club is well-established and held in high regard both locally and nationally and I will do all that I can to both enhance the reputation and further it.
Born, raised and still living in nearby Rogerstone means that this is a local club to me. Outside of golf in my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife Sarah and two sons Meirion & Emyr and I also enjoy playing cricket for Newport Fugitives CC and am currently in the Wales Over 50’s squad (having only just reached that age!!)

I am married with 2 grown up children and I have been a member of St. Mellons Golf Club for over 15 years. I worked in the utility sector my entire working life and held several senior positions. During this time, I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that I’m sure I can put to good use as a member of the management board.
I have been a member of SMGC for forty years. During those years I served directly on committee or in closely related positions for 27 years. In that time I chaired various sub-committees inc. Greens; Forward Planning and Entertainments. I was Club Captain in 1989; President in 2008 and Secretary/Manager from 2002 – 2008. At the time of becoming Secretary in 2002 the Club was significantly in debt. The position was rectified within two years. As Captain I introduced into the rules a Forward Planning committee. My six years in the position of Secretary/Manager were successful years for the Club.
I’m Rob Cook, Men’s Captain of St Mellons Golf Club for the 2023/2024 season. I’m extremely proud to hold that office and to represent our fine club at the many functions which I will attend over the year, on and off the course, both at St Mellons and beyond. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I possibly can in that period. I also look forward to welcoming our many visitors from far and wide and hope you will all enjoy our superb course and facilities, both on the course and in our club house.
I was born and grew up in Cardiff and have been a member of St Mellons for 20 years, having previously been a member of Mountain Ash GC, Brynhill GC and Peterstone Lakes GC. Golf is one of the many sports I enjoy, although most of these, such as athletics, football and F1 are from the comfort of my armchair. Other than F1, for obvious reasons, I enjoyed participating in such sports when I was younger but golf is now very much the one I enjoy most.
I am a family man, who is lucky enough to have a daughter and 2 grandsons, with whom I am very close. They are my prime focus away from the course and my greatest pleasure.
My working life was spent in the retail industry. I started out on the shop floor and worked my way up over the years to eventually manage my company’s prime outlet in South Wales, with all the responsibilities that entailed, including managing staff, ensuring our products were properly displayed and our facilities were first class, promoting customer relations and developing and maintaining budgets. These are all skills I bring to my current role, which I hope will be of benefit to our Board of Directors, our members and our visitors alike.
Since I retired 5 years ago I have devoted more of my time to St Mellons, including being a member of several committees. These have been challenging times for all clubs as a result of the pandemic but, thankfully, I have witnessed St Mellons emerge stronger and, in my view better, as a result of the time, effort and money invested. I’m sure a bright and exciting future awaits us and am grateful to be able to play my part in it.
I have been happily married to Keith for 30 years and have a daughter called Sophie. I am a retired primary school teacher, having taught in Caerphilly for 34 years, specialising in music and PE. From an early age my parents introduced me to the game of golf and consequently golf has always played a huge part in my life. For 36 years I was a member of Tredegar Park but 12 years ago I joined St Mellons Golf Club along with Keith and Sophie. We are a golfing family! While serving on the ladies committee I have been the Club’s County representative for Monmouthshire Ladies. I am a regular member of the ladies 1 st team and have represented St
Mellons at Welsh Team and County events. I have also been an organiser for the South Wales Girls Golf Association, encouraging girls to develop their golfing experiences through fun and competition golf and ensuring that the future generation of women’s golf continues to thrive and develop. In my spare time I enjoy riding my horse, gardening during the summer months and drinking fine wine! It is with great pleasure that I take on the role of being Lady Captain and I look forward to a golfing year filled with enjoyment, great golf and happy memories.
