Club Officials 1

Russell Thomas

General Manager

I’m Russell Thomas and I am General Manager of St Mellons Golf Club. I bring to the role a wealth of experience gained over the last 16 years working as a golf club manager to benefit St Mellons.

As well as having managed Newport, Cardiff & Thurlestone golf clubs, I have spent the last seven years at The Glamorganshire. During my time there, I helped it to grow into one of the premier clubs in South Wales appointing a new Head Professional, Course & Grounds Manager and Clubhouse Manager. I also supported a project team on major developments including an extensive bunker improvement programme, brand new car-park and the upgrading of the facilities around the Clubhouse. Those of you who regularly play at The Glamorganshire may have notice these changes.

As a result of such progress, the Club has a much-increased annual turnover, greater member satisfaction, a waiting list and an entrance fee. I am very proud of these achievements particularly as they come on the back of the difficult experiences we all went through during the pandemic. I aim to help the new Board, Staff and Membership take St Mellons forward together and hopefully replicate my successes mentioned. I know that the Club is well-established and held in high regard both locally and nationally and I will do all that I can to both enhance the reputation and further it.

Born, raised and still living in nearby Rogerstone means that this is a local club to me. Outside of golf in my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife Sarah and two sons Meirion & Emyr and I also enjoy playing cricket for Rogerstone CC and am currently in the Wales Over 50’s squad (having only just reached that age!!)

Club Officials 8

Gill Rees

Lady Captain

I was introduced to golf by my father whilst I was a PE teacher in my thirties. He was a member of St Mellons so I naturally joined here. I love all sports but golf is the one sport I have stuck with over the years. We have a fantastic, challenging golf course, a welcoming membership and a great professional team that run all aspects of the club.

I enjoy the competitive side of golf but know that really I’m a “happy” golfer that is out for enjoyment and wants others to enjoy it too.

I am proud to be ladies captain and look forward to representing the members and St Mellons Golf Club in this our Diamond Jubilee year.
