Club Newsletter: December 2022

Our December 2022 Update

We hope you all had a pleasant holiday period! Here’s our final newsletter of 2022, giving you a round up of all that is happening at St. Mellons Golf Club. The newsletter will look back at December and ahead into January and the new year. You’ll find different sections from different areas of our club below.

Club Newsletter: December 2022 1

From The Board of Directors

As we mentioned in the 30th Nov’22 Newsletter it is the Club’s intention to post all “relevant” information (both Business & Golf).  So from now we will be using the Club V1 Documents Folders as  a “Members Information Hub” – thus being accessible to the vast majority of members.

Access to the Club V1 Hub – Document Folder is either via the new Club Website Members Area,  or via the Club V1 Mobile Phone App Hub. Just log in as usual – no additional login / password is necessary. The Document Folder(Info Hub) is situated just below the Bookable Competitions section.

If you have any problems with accessing the Club V1 hub please contact the Office, in the first instance.

From Our Captain

Dear members, I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and a great New Years Eve and had all the gifts you asked for from Father Christmas (those of us who asked for better handicaps and more wins, Father Christmas said he can deliver gifts but not golf miracles) I hope you did not over indulge as I did a few times.

The new St Mellon’s web site is looking very good and very professional (thank you Simon Dibley and all concerned in this transformation).

Children’s Christmas party was fantastic (thank you to Andy Elston, Bev Dobbs, Jeannette s Watkins, Sandra Parry and all the volunteers’ without your input it would not be such a great successful day).

Here’s to a fantastic 2023 and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!

Kind regards, Brian Konten

Martin Belt

Many of you are aware that Martin had an accident and broke his hip a couple of months ago. Both The Professional Golf Team and Martin himself have appreciated all the well wishes and interest to see how he is recovering.

We can tell you Martin’s mobility is slowly improving week on week but is still a few weeks away from being off crutches. Martin is still in good spirits and can’t wait until he’s back on the golf course.

The Professional Golf Team are looking forward to seeing Martin back around the golf club either in a playing capacity or back in the shop later on this year.

Course Update From The Head Green Keeper

At the start of December, I received the results of our annual soil analysis test, and I am pleased to inform you that the results were very good. Thatch and organic matter are at optimum levels and the conductivity of the soil is good. The only cause for concern was low levels of calcium and magnesium which will be addressed with applications of a high calcium and magnesium liquid fertilizer. The greens will also receive an application of a high calcium/magnesium granular next year to maintain optimum levels throughout the season.

At the start of the month the greens received some much-needed aeration after weeks of wet weather with the toro procore using 10mm tines to a depth of 4 inches. This process is extremely important as it provides the soil with vital gas exchange, relieves compaction and increases microbial activity.

The greenstaff have made some good progress this month with leaf collection and winter work. All tree canopies between the 17th and 18th holes have been raised to improve aesthetics and playability and work has begun on the 13th ditch which we plan to open up and remove all vegetation. A vast amount of leaves have also been blown and collected throughout the course and making the most of the dry weather we have also mowed all rough, fairways and semi rough. Our tree surgeon has also been on site this month and has carried out vital tree work on the 15th, 18th and car park.

Although we have had a welcomed break from the rain this month, we have suffered prolonged freezing temperatures which has on several occasions took the greens out of play. It is of vital importance that the greens come out of play in these conditions. When frost is present on grass leaf blades this means that the 80% of plant tissue made up of water is frozen. Foot traffic on these areas cause the ice crystals to puncture the plants cell walls which will result in bruised/dead plant tissue. You may also notice that the greens do not always return to play straight after the leaf frost has gone. The reason for this is that when the top 12mm or so has thawed out, the soil underneath is often still frozen. This is when plant structure damage, such as root shearing and crown damage can occur. I understand this can sometimes be frustrating as the greens may look playable at this point however it is extremely important that the greens are completely thawed out before they are returned to play to avoid any damage taking place.

Golf Update

With 2022 almost behind us, we start to look forward to the new season. Firstly, we  would like to thank Toby and his team for all their effort, hard work and support in 2022, while we also look forward to continuing the relationship this year.

We have also listened carefully to the feedback we receive and have made changes to the usual Saturday fixture list to add variety, which will hopefully be attractive to everyone. For example, Members & Guests will now be split over 2 weekends, one  of which will be a Saturday 4BB and the other being a Sunday individual competition. So now members will be able to bring extra guests to enjoy all our fine club can offer.

All next year’s fixtures are now available on the members’ V1 app, and can be found under documents (fixtures).

The professional team have also been working hard and are putting together a very exciting Sunday programme so that even more members can enjoy competitive golf.

Thank you

That’s all for this month, thank you again to everyone who contributed to this newsletter this month and thank you to each and every one of our staff, members and visitors for continuing to make St Mellons Golf Club a fantastic, welcoming place for all in 2022, which we’re sure will continue in 2023 and beyond. We’ll see you all in the new year!
