Our June 2024 Update
We hope you’ve all had a great start to the year. Here’s our update for May 2024 from the whole team at St Mellons Golf Club.
Update From The Board
We are pleased to confirm that the 5 year membership deal was fully subscribed to and as such is now closed. The money will go towards financing upgrades and improvements to our club, including an all-weather outdoor viewing area on the balcony using an 8m x 4m Pergola that will act as a useful overflow area when the bar is busy, or extra room for weddings and functions. The Pergola will be purchased and fitted in June in time for the long daylight hours.
We will also be purchasing a new water storage tank to replace the existing one, which has come to the end of its useful life. This work will be carried out during the autumn months.
The delivery of our new mowers from Toro, which were ordered over 18 months ago, have been delayed. As a result, we have renegotiated our existing lease at a significant reduction to the club and have also negotiated a very competitive price for the purchase of one of the existing lease mowers that was due to be returned. This mower, used for cutting the rough and tee banks, will replace our existing 2007 and 2009 mowers that are on their last legs.
Our 5 year strategic plan will be reviewed and updated over the coming months with a key focus on further course improvements in addition to those already complete or underway.

Dear Members,
From such humble beginnings160 members managed to raise £34000 to purchase the club in 1964 , hence making it a member owned. What a great club we members have built over the last 60 years The highlight of May for me was the 60th Anniversary Dance on Saturday the 18th of May.It was very well attended event and would like to thank all the members and guests for their support.Big thank you to the Social Committee and everyone who helped to make it a great success.I look forward to the Diamond Summer Party on 13th July 2024 a great opportunity for the members who missed out on the Anniversary Dance.
The golf events during the Anniversary week were successful and enjoyable.Congratulations to Ben Thomas for winning the Mens Anniversary cup and Jivan Bhogal for winning the ladies Anniversary cup. These will be presented to our winners on our finals day the 7th of September. Both the Anniversary cups have been donated by our Board of Management which is very much appreciated by all the members.

From Our Ladies’ Captain
Dear members
May has been a very busy month and I hope we can all now feel like we are in the “swing “of things!
The ladies Wednesday competitions have been progressing successfully with no weather closures thanks to our greenstaff that work so hard to keep things running as seamlessly as possible.
Julia Dolby & Maria Woods qualified to represent St Mellons at the regional final of Wales Golf Medal & Bowls to be held at St Mellons on 4th June.
Linda Hughes & Julie Brown were successful in winning the Dorothy Meacock County pairs. They will represent us at the final in August.
And in our Anniversary week Jivan Bhogal won our Anniversary Cup with Roseanne Walters winning the Vets section. Well done to the winners and all that took part.
Our Championship qualifier was played last week. Well done to the seven that successfully joined our current champion Sally Madsen. Bev Smith, Ann Booth, Lizzie Brown, Karen Thomas, Gill Rees, Julia Dolby and Bev Dobbs.
The Senior Ladies played their first match of the season at home against Glamorganshire. Ten ladies went out in pairs with an enjoyable time had by all. St Mellons were successful, winning 3, losing 1 and drawing 1. A great start ladies!
The County Championships also took place this last week at St Pierre on the Old Course. Five ladies entered and persevered in terrible conditions. No one qualified for the knockout stages….we were just glad to have represented our club on the day. Well done again for putting St Mellons first!
A very busy June is almost upon us. Good luck to all those competing in our Wednesday competitions and of course our knockouts.
To finish I would just like to say what a successful week we had starting on 13th May and ending with our Diamond Anniversary Dance on the Saturday. So much hard work went into making it special and memorable. All those that attended I’m sure would agree it was.
Enjoy your golf!
Gill Rees
